Speak Out for Military Kids (SOMK) is a youth-driven educational speakers’ bureau designed to generate awareness and community activism to support “suddenly military” youth and families. It is part of the Rhode Island 4-H Operation: Military Kids program.
One of the issues facing military youth and families is the lack of community awareness of the unique stressors and challenges they face during times of conflict and war. This lack of understanding by the general public can make military youth feel isolated and misunderstood. The SOMK team educates the public about the challenges faced by military kids in our community. You do not have to be part of a military family to participate!
What will we do as part of the SOMK Training Team?
Team members will attend four workshops this spring under the leadership of a senior 4-H leader with the goal being to produce a Public Service Announcement in a real television studio in May. There will also be other speaking opportunities for the Team at community events, special occasions, school groups, etc.
