Does Best Buy Offer A Military Discount?
Unfortunately, as of May 2023, the answer to that question is no.
In 2019, I spoke directly with a manager at a local Best Buy, and he informed me that they have not had an official military discount available for several years.
And in 2023, that’s still true.
With that said, there are a few other creative ways you can save at the electronics giant.

What’s the deal with the Best Buy Military Discount?
So you’ve probably come across a few websites claiming that Best Buy has a military discount.
However, like most things on the internet, you always have to consider the source.
I’ve noticed in my research that much of the info is outdated and the discounts no longer exist in many cases.
For example, this Business Insider article notes that Best Buy offers 10% off at select locations, and 50% off Geek Squad services.
However, that same article also notes that Home Depot offers tax exemption to all active duty military personnel, reservists, retired or disabled veterans, and their immediate families.
If you click on the link they provide, it takes you to the “Tax Exempt Purchases” page.
It’s not until you start reading the details of their policy that you realize there are no discounts for military veterans.
The only discount applied is for Government Buyers ONLY, not your everyday vet.
It turns out that Home Depot in fact DOES offer a discount for active duty and reserve military personnel, just not the kind that Business Insider is claiming.
Lastly, a Reddit post that has several Best Buy employees chiming in also supports the notion that they don’t offer anything.
Best Buy Forum Post On Military Discounts
On another note, I was researching through the Best Buy forums to see if any military discounts were available.
In response to a question posed by one of the forum members, here’s what the Best Buy rep had to say:
Welcome back to the Best Buy forums! It’s true we do not have an official military discount currently in place, but not having a formal policy in place doesn’t stop us from making sure our customers find the best deals out there to help them save some money. We have promotions which last all week to some that only last for an hour so be sure to adjust your account settings to receive the most current and up to date sales!
Any discounts outside of policy would be left to the store’s sole discretion. I truly hope you are able to take advantage of one of the many sales we offer here soon and never hesitate to reach back out to us if you have any other question, comments, or concerns!
So clearly they do not have one.
With that said, there are a few other ways you can save with your next Best Buy order.
Here are a few of them:
#1: Best Buy Student Discount And Deals
Best Buy offers deals to students who are currently attending a college or university, are planning on doing so, or are the parent of someone attending school.
Obviously, this is not a military discount.
With that said, the best part about Best Buy’s student discount is you don’t even need to be a student! (You’ll find out what I mean later.)
Best Buy doesn’t exactly offer a specific % discount for students and their families.
What they do offer is weekly student deals that could literally help you save as much as $10 – $200 on your order.
Here’s how to access your Best Buy student discount step-by-step:
Step 1: Click Here to visit the Best Buy student hub page.
Step 2: Click the button that says ‘Sign up for deals’
It will look like this on a desktop:

Step 3: Sign In / Create a Best Buy Account
Once you click that button, you’ll then be redirected to a page that asks you to either login to your Best Buy account or create a new one.
For the purposes of this article, we’ll create a new account.
Step 4: Create An Account (optional)
Simply fill out the form and click ‘create an account’:
Step 5: Sign Up For Student Deals
Once you’ve either created an account or logged in with an existing one, you’ll then be redirected to a page that allows you to sign up for student deals.
The cool thing is, you actually don’t even need to be a college student to access the deals.
When you select the drop-down for “Which describes you”, you’ll see several other options, including:
- I’m going to college within the next year
- I’m a parent of a college student
- I’m a parent of a K-12 student
Once you click ‘sign up,’ finally you’ll click the button that says “Get your student deals”.
Once you click that, you’re in!
Best Buy offers all sorts of items at a significant discount, including:
- Macbooks
- Dell Laptops
- HP Laptops
- Ipads
- Sharp TV’s
- Chromebooks
- Audio systems
- Wireless headphones
- and much more

What’s The Fine Print?
Obviously, no deal or discount comes without the fine print, and Best Buy is no different.
The biggest fine-print item is the fact that these deals exclude ‘open-box items.’
Open-box items are exactly what they sound like…
According to Consumer Reports, they are items where someone previously bought the product, opened the box, and for whatever reason returned it to the store for a refund and/or store credit.
With that said, generally speaking, ‘open box’ items are usually in very good to excellent condition.
Not quite new, but pretty close!

#2: Deal of the Day
Another way you can save a ton of money with your next Best Buy purchase is by checking out their ‘Deal of the Day’ page.
You’ll find a wide assortment of products that are offered at really steep discounts, including:
- Phones
- Dyson vacuums
- HDMI cables
- Cameras
- Pressure cookers
- and much more
This program has some astounding deals that you literally won’t find anywhere else.
For example, I just checked out their official ‘Deal of the Day’ page here, and they were featuring an LG wireless subwoofer and digital amplifier for $189.99.
Normally, this specific speaker set retails for like $400, so this is a great deal!
The obvious downside is they have a very limited selection, and they likely won’t always have exactly what you’re looking for.
With that said, if you’re looking to catch a great deal, there’s no reason not to give it a quick look.

#3: Clearance Items
The last Best Buy discount option we’re going to talk about is their clearance items.
Similar to the ‘Deal of the Day’ above, these are items that are either refurbished or otherwise considered ‘used.’
While the savings don’t appear to be as steep as those in the ‘Deal of the Day’ page, there are a ton more items to choose from.
The DOTD page has like 5 or 6 items, while the Clearance page has literally hundreds of items.
And in many cases, these items can be as much as 50% to 60% off their normal prices!

While there is no such thing as a Best Buy military discount, if you’re a student, you could be in line for some big savings.
