Car insurance. No one likes to pay for it, yet it’s required by law for anyone driving in the US.

Luckily, there are a number of car insurance military discounts offered by most of the major auto insurance companies.

OMK got in touch with representatives from 19 of the largest auto insurers in the US regarding their military discount policy.

Unsurprisingly, some of them offered one, and some do not.

So which car insurance companies offer a military discount?

In short, most of the major ones do. Here’s a list of 10 of them:

AARP is short for the American Association of Retired Persons.

The mission of the company is “to empower people to choose how they live as they age”.

As a result, AARP provides certain types of insurance, including automobile insurance.

According to Wikipedia, the association claims more than 38 million members.

It is a number expected to keep growing thanks to the influx of Baby Boomers.

After becoming a member retirees can enjoy benefits that younger people do not, including savings on car insurance.

How to redeem your discount: Unfortunately, AARP does not currently feature any exclusive military discount.

However, AARP rates are considered among the most affordable for those that qualify for a new car insurance plan.

Aflac is the zany car insurance company with the funny duck commercials.

Though they are definitely to be taken seriously as Aflac represents the larger provider of supplemental insurance in the United States.

Aflac was founded in 1955 and has headquarters in Columbus, Georgia.

Though many people appreciate its car insurance plans, its most common underwrites are payroll deduction insurance coverage.

How to redeem your discount: There is not a Aflac military discount available.

3. AFI Auto Insurance Military Discount

Armed Forces Insurance (AFI) is dedicated exclusively to military personnel.

In addition to property and casualty insurance, AFI also features coverage for auto, motorcycle, home, renter, and other types of premium personal insurance.

The company is headquartered in Leavenworth, Kansas.

In addition to signing up for a new insurance plan, all AFI members receive free identity theft resolution and document recovery, which is a really nice feature.

Secondly, AFI provides homeowners and car owners with interactive tools and other resources to help make their home more energy efficient, tips for saving money on fuel, and other practical solutions.

The company is defined as a “reciprocal exchange” which means that the insurer shares a cooperative stance with policyholders where they help own and manage how funds are distributed.

The program is supervised by the Subscribers’ Advisory Committee (SAC) which is composed of active duty members, reservists, and retired military.

Auto coverage can support not only active duty and veterans, but also National Guard and Reserves.

It includes spouses and dependents in certain situations too.

It is also one of the largest public held companies in the nation.

Allstate also serves people in Canada though it is primarily dedicated to the U.S.

In 1993, Allstate broke off the Sears, Roebuck and Company partnership.

Allstate ranks number 79 on the list of Fortune 500 companies for 2018.

How to redeem your discount: Allstate is dedicated to making auto insurance affordable for everyone, including active duty U.S. military and retired personnel. 

The company does provide a military discount.

However, it is difficult to get into specifics because the amount in savings depends on where you reside and exactly what types of policies you are looking to enroll in.

Allstate, like other car insurance providers, will also factor in your motor vehicle record and history of car accidents and/or traffic violations.

You could receive substantial savings, but make sure you ask a representative. Online quotes will not reflect an Allstate military discount.

In addition to getting savings on your car insurance Allstate also focuses on hiring people that previously served the United States.

Allstate notes that they appreciate the “commitment, teamwork, and leadership” that U.S. Armed Forces members bring to the table.

Allstate is involved in the Veteran Jobs Mission Coalition.

They also provide the Allstate Veteran Engagement Team & Supporters (AVETS) program for advocating interaction and collaboration between military families employed by Allstate.

5. Esurance Auto Insurance Military Discount

Esurance is revolutionizing the way people handle car insurance.

The American company also sells home, renters, and motorcycle insurance.

The plans are featured online and offer a quick way to sign up for new coverage.

Esurance was launched at the turn of the 21st century to compete with other budget friendly providers like Progressive and GEICO.

Allstate currently owns and manages Esurance.

How to redeem your discount: There is no discount available through Esurance. Why?

Esurance is owned by Allstate which also does not provide an exclusive discount for active duty military or veterans.

On that note, they DO provide car insurance for military personnel in the event you need to cancel or reinstate your car insurance.

6. Farmers Car Insurance Military Discount

Farmers Insurance is an American company that specializes in offering coverage for automobiles, homes, and small businesses.

They also feature some financial services for interested parties.

Farmers serves more than 10 million households with over 19 million different insurance policies in all 50 states.

The Farmers Insurance Exchange is the largest of the three major insurance entities.

Farmers has more than 48,000 agents in the United States.

In addition to car insurance, members can receive competitive rates for motorcycle coverage, home insurance, and life insurance.

A number of recreational vehicles like ATVs and RVs are also supported.

Farmers also supports small and mid-size businesses.

The coverage can include items like liability coverage, property insurance, commercial auto, and workers comp.

How to redeem your discount: OMK contacted a representative from Farmers Insurance to get more information about their military discount.

According to the representative, there is a Farmers military discount though it is difficult to provide an accurate amount of savings in this article.

The Farmers military discount depends on your location as well as policies.

In order to receive a more accurate quote you will need to call Farmers directly at 1-888-327-6335.

Additionally, Farmers is considered a “military friendly” employer.

The company actively hires former military and provides a Veterans & Advocates program for making the transition into the company.

According to Farmers, one in four agents is a military veteran.

Therefore, the company is considered among the Top 150 Military Employers in the United States, as well as a Top 50 Military Spouse Employer.

Farmers also agreed to sign off on a statement with the Department of Defense to help get Guard and Reserve (ESGR) more employment opportunities.

It was recently awarded with the Patriot Award in response to their support.

7. GEICO Auto Insurance Military Discount

GEICO is short for the Government Employees Insurance Company.

In fact, GEICO is so popular that it is currently the second largest auto insurer in the United States.

Only State Farm pulls in more policies per year than GEICO.

According to the most recent statistics, GEICO covers more than 24 million automobiles.

There are approximately 15 million policy holders to date.

It is possible to get new auto coverage through GEICO’s website, over the phone, or speaking with a local agent in-person.

GEICO competes annually with State Farm, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, and Progressive.

How to redeem your discount: GEICO does support the U.S. Military in many different ways.

For starters, the company provides exclusive savings for active duty military and retirees.

In addition to the GEICO military discount service members can also receive Emergency Deployment Discounts.

The basic discount presents up to 15 percent off a total insurance premium for the year.

The GEICO military discount is applicable to active duty, retired, and members of the National Guard or Reserves.

The Emergency Deployment Discount is offered when service members are deployed to imminent danger pay areas.

The areas are designated by the Department of Defense.

It is possible to receive even more savings on a GEICO auto plan when:

  • You have received orders in a DOD designated area.
  • Your vehicle is stored under a approved storage protection plan.

8. John Hancock Car Insurance Military Discount

John Hancock is an insurance company that primarily specializes in life insurance. The company was named after the famous patriot of the same name.

John Hancock was acquired by a Canadian life insurance company called Manulife Financial in 2004.

Since then the provider has changed a little regarding how it manages its policies.

How to redeem your discount: Please keep in mind that car insurance is not John Hancock’s specialty.

However, it does endorse one type of discount exclusive to the military which is more than what some other auto insurance companies can claim.

The only premium John Hancock military discount you can receive is if you need auto coverage on a military base.

According to a rep that we spoke with from John Hancock, receiving the discount can get a little complicated.

You will need to contact human resources at the base and ask for more information.

The HR rep should be able to provide more details if you are interested in having car insurance on a military base.

9. Liberty Mutual Car Insurance Military Discount

Liberty Mutual Group is an American company that deals with global insurance.

It is reportedly the fourth largest property and casualty insurer in the United States. The company also ranks 68th on the Fortune 500 list.

Liberty has over 900 locations throughout the world.

In addition to property and casualty insurance the company also writes policies for car insurance, homeowner insurance, general liability, and workers’ compensation.

Liberty is unique in that policyholders serve as shareholders within the company.

Therefore, they have more say than your typical policyholder from another insurer.

How to redeem your discount: OMK got in touch with a representative from Liberty Mutual to request more information about their military discount.

According to the rep there is a Liberty military discount.

The amount of the discount, like most other insurance companies, depends on factors like location and policy.

In order to get more information, and an accurate quote you will want to contact Liberty Mutual directly at 1-800-837-5254.

According to the representative at Liberty that OMK spoke with there are very few states in the U.S. that do not support a military discount.

So the chances of you saving something is fairly strong.

In order to get the best discount Liberty will assess your car, your driving record, and your policy to get you the top rate.

There are many different ways you can save.

10. Metlife Military Discount

Metlife is one of the largest global providers of insurance and employee benefits in the world.

Metlife reports it has over 90 million customers in 60 different countries.

In 2018, it ranked number 43 on the Fortune 500 list.

In the last decade Metlife has expanded its services to feature other types of insurance. Its headquarters is in Manhattan, New York City.

How to redeem your discount: There is no Metlife military discount in existence. You may want to consider another car insurance provider that could get you cheaper rates.

11. Nationwide Military Discount

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company offers financial services and insurance in the United States.

The company is based out of Columbus, Ohio.

It is ranked number 73 in the Fortune 500 listing for 100 Best Companies to Work For.

How to redeem your discount: There is a Nationwide military discount exclusive to veterans and active duty.

It is not easy to present an accurate assessment of how much you could save with Nationwide primarily because the discount varies based on state and policy.

The company provides discounts on auto insurance in a variety of ways.

In addition to inquiring about a military discount, Nationwide also reports that you can save more money by bundling home and auto through Nationwide, as well as enrolling in SmartRide, remaining accident free, and demonstrating defensive driving.

Navy Federal Credit Union is regulated under the authority of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

It is the largest “natural member” credit union in the United States.

The credit union reported over 8 million members in 2019.

How to redeem your discount: Navy Credit Union informed OMK that there is not a current discount for U.S. Armed Forces members, past or present.

However, a representative from Navy Credit Union did advise us to refer members to GEICO for a military discount.

13. Progressive Military Discount

Progressive is one of the most popular companies in the United States for car insurance.

The company is largely recognized for offering some of the best rates available.

Progressive insures automobiles, motorcycles, RVs, and boats.

You can also get a home insurance policy through Progressive.

It just cracked the list of the Top 100 for the Fortune 500 list of 2019.

How to redeem your discount: There is a Progressive military discount available to active duty military and veterans.

When OMK got in touch with a Progressive representative we were informed that the exact amount of savings will depend on a variety of factors.

The rep was certain that Kentucky and Louisiana were two states that definitely participated in a military discount.

For more information about the Progressive military discount please call them at 1-800-776-4737 for a new car insurance quote.

Progressive is also a proud supporter of the U.S. Military.

The company currently employs more than 1,300 former military and reservists. Progressive provides benefits for military exclusive to reservists or veterans.

Additionally, the company is regarded as one of the Top 100 Military Friendly Spouse Employers.

It received the same award in 2019 for Top 100 Military Friendly Brands and Employers.

14. State Farm Military Discount

State Farm is known for its trademark commercials and stellar reputation. The large insurance company also dabbles in select financial services.

It is headquartered in Bloomington, Illinois.

State Farm ranked number 36 on the Fortune 500 list for 2018. Its car insurance rates are competitive with just about everyone on the market.

How to redeem your discount: Unfortunately, State Farm does not have a military discount.

15. The General Military Discount

The General is a lesser known car insurance provider, but is pretty well known for their commercials.

Like this one: 

The General car insurance was actually acquired by American Family Insurance in 2012, yet still exists as a separate brand.

In the past, The General has been known to specialize on insuring drivers that are labeled as “high risk” and therefore may have higher monthly premiums due to their previous driving record.

How to redeem your discount: When we reached out to a representative of The General, we were informed that there is a military discount

The discount is available depending on location and policy, which is dependent on numerous specific factors.

Please call The General at 1-866-519-7422 to get exact details.

Based on your driving record The General may or may not serve as the best place to find car insurance.

Keep in mind, General car insurance specializes in insuring “high risk” drivers, so not everyone will get the best rate through them.

16. The Hartford Military Discount

The Hartford is a U.S. based investment and insurance provider.

The Hartford is another Fortune 500 company that is based out of Connecticut.

It ranked 156th in last year’s Fortune 500 list.

The Hartford is also ranked the 12th largest property and casualty company in the nation.

Though they also sell auto and home insurance it is not its most prominent types of policies.

How to redeem your discount: Unfortunately, The Hartford Insurance does not have a military discount for new car plans.

Why?

The Harford is associated with AARP which also does not feature an exclusive discount for active duty military or veterans.

17. Travelers Military Discount

Travelers Insurance is reportedly the second largest writer of U.S. commercial property casualty insurance and third largest writer for personal insurance in the country.

The company just missed the Top 100 in the 2018 Fortune 500 rankings.

In addition to many different business insurance policies, Travelers also supports home and auto insurance.

 

How to redeem your discount: When OMK reached out to a representative at Travelers Insurance we were informed that there is currently no Travelers military discount.

However, the same rep did inform us that the insurance company is currently looking into providing one in the near future.

18. USAA Military Discount

The USAA is host for United Services Automobile Association.

It does require a membership to join USAA yet is beneficial to some military members and their families.

According to USAA, there were 12.4 million members in 2017. The association dates back to the 1920s after it was launched by a group of U.S. Army officers. 

The purpose of the new company was to help insure U.S. military that may get labeled into the “high risk” group.

How to redeem your discount: OMK contacted a representative at USAA for more information.

The association does provide a military discount, but you need to become a member first.

After you become a member USAA will determine how much you can save on auto insurance based on the state and driving record.

The insurer also updates their website frequently for the latest promotions. 

Membership to USAA provides exclusive benefits, discounts, and products for military members and eligible family.

Members can receive banking through USAA, along with auto insurance and personal advice.

Exclusive shopping and discounts are available for a number of products only through USAA.

Additionally, USAA members can receive a 15 percent discount if a car gets garaged on a military base during deployment.

The savings can increase to 90 percent off if stored at a location USAA defines as “secured”.

Please call USAA directly for more information about their military discount. They are available over the phone by dialing 1-800-531-8722.

Conclusion

Not every car insurance company in the United States features a military discount. It can vary based on location and driving history.

Remember, it costs nothing to get a quote so shop around with a few different auto insurance companies before settling on one.
