Army M1 Abrams Systems Maintainer (MOS 91A): Career Details

Army M1 Abrams Systems Maintainer (MOS 91A) is responsible for performing maintenance of M1 Abrams tanks.

These specialist will diagnose and troubleshoot any malfunctions on the Abrams tanks.

This is an entry-level position that requires an individual who wants to work with electronic and mechanical systems.

Qualifications and Training

To enter into this MOS, recruits must take the ASVAB test.

Recruits must score at least a 99 on the Mechanical Maintenance (MM) portion of the ASVAB test or a combination of an 88 on the Mechanical Maintenance and 92 on the General Technical (GT) portions of the ASVAB.

Once all testing is complete, recruits will attend Basic Combat Training for 10 weeks.

After Basic Training, soldiers will go to Advanced Individual Training for 24 weeks.

Advanced Individual Training consists of classroom and field instruction.

What are the Job Duties of M1 Abrams System Maintainer?

The M1 Abrams System Maintainer is responsible for performing maintenance on various system components of the Abrams Tank.

The M1 Abrams Tank is the Army’s primary ground combat system.

The tank can reach speeds up to 42 mph, has a 1,500 horsepower turbine engine, is easily maneuverable, has special armor and provides on-the-move lethal assault capabilities against enemies.

Soldiers in this MOS are required to be familiar with all of the complex systems of the M1 Abrams.

They will learn and apply electronic and mechanical principles to complete maintenance activities safely.

They will use different test equipment on the tank.

Testing will also be completed on the weapons systems to ensure the weapons fire for units in the field.

The specialist will operate and complete maintenance on the weapons systems.

M1 Abrams System Maintainer is required to complete repairs and any scheduled maintenance.

The System Maintainer will work with power and hand-tools to complete maintenance.

Schematics, drawings and wiring diagrams will also be used to complete maintenance activities.

They will go hands-on to complete any repairs with the turbine engine.

Specialist must be familiar with how to repair the suspension, transmission and any electrical components.

They are also required to troubleshoot/ repair steering, track-assembly, auxiliary power, hydraulic, fire extinguisher/suppression and gas particulate systems.

Any maintenance activities that are performed will be documented by the System Maintainer.

This position can require soldiers to perform repair duties in the field or in any other location that the tank is stationed.
