The United States Coast Guard maintains a nationwide network of bases, districts, sectors, stations, air stations, and support facilities to fulfill its missions of maritime safety, security, search and rescue, law enforcement, environmental protection, and national defense.
Unlike the other branches, the Coast Guard does not have a small number of large centralized bases; instead it operates hundreds of smaller, mission-focused units distributed along U.S. coasts, rivers, the Great Lakes, and overseas territories.
Major hubs include Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington D.C., Training Center Cape May in New Jersey, and operational commands in key ports, while air stations support rotary and fixed-wing aircraft for rescue and surveillance.
Each district oversees multiple sectors, which in turn manage smaller boat stations, aids-to-navigation teams, and other units tailored to regional needs.
This distributed structure enables rapid response across maritime domains and supports both domestic and international operations.
In this updated guide for 2026, we outline the Coast Guard’s organizational structure, major districts, key bases and stations, air stations, training centers, and notable changes or expansions.

What People Get Wrong About US Coast Guard Bases
Many assume the Coast Guard has a few large bases similar to Army forts or Air Force bases with thousands of personnel.
In reality, Coast Guard “bases” are typically smaller, specialized facilities; there are no massive installations like Fort Bragg or Joint Base Lewis-McChord; most are boat stations (20-60 personnel), air stations (100-300), or sector commands, with the largest operational hubs supporting regional missions rather than centralized garrisons.
Another misconception is that all Coast Guard units are located on the ocean coasts.
The service operates extensively on inland waterways, the Great Lakes, major rivers (Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri), and even in landlocked areas through sectors, marine safety units, and aids-to-navigation teams; districts cover the entire U.S. including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
People often think Coast Guard Headquarters or major training centers are the primary operational bases.
Headquarters in Washington D.C. and Training Center Cape May focus on policy and recruit training; operational bases are spread across nine districts (plus Atlantic Area and Pacific Area commands), with sectors and stations handling day-to-day missions like search and rescue, drug interdiction, and port security.
Some believe overseas bases are limited or non-existent.
The Coast Guard maintains permanent presence and detachments in places like Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Bahrain (PATFORSWA for Middle East support), and forward-deployed cutters; these support international partnerships, counter-smuggling, and defense operations far from U.S. shores.
Finally, a common view is that base locations and structures rarely change.
The Coast Guard periodically realigns sectors, closes small underutilized stations, or opens new ones based on mission needs (e.g., increased Arctic focus with more assets in Alaska); as of 2026, no major base closures have occurred recently, but ongoing recapitalization includes new cutters and facilities supporting expanded missions.
Understanding these realities provides a clearer picture of the Coast Guard’s agile, distributed, and mission-driven basing strategy.
